Preparing Your Quilt Top

Checklist

  • Remember to include backing that is sized at least 4 inches wider on each side than the quilt top. So 60” x 60” top = 68” x 68” backing

  • If your backing needs piecing by us, there is an additional charge.

  • Be sure to indicate if top and/or backing is directional!

  • Choose the design you want

  • Choose the thread you want

  • If binding attachment is requested, include the sewn binding. Measure carefully. If you wish us to cut, sew and attach binding, please include fabric!

  • Hobbs 80/20 batting is available for an additional charge. You may provide batting, but be sure we have discussed. Ex. an infant quilt will need to be warm but breathable and washable. Batting makes a difference.

  • Indicate whether your quilt top and/or backing has been prewashed.

Common Questions/Issues

  • The most common issue we see is borders that do not lay flat or the quilt top is not perfectly square.

Here is an excellent article from “Sew Can She”. It clearly explains how and why you should add your borders a certain way, the choices you have, how to properly measure and why it matters to the longarmer.

How to add borders the right way

  • Another common issue is trimming threads. While you may think that you do not have to trim threads since you will not see them after the top is quilted, many times they do show through! Especially if you have a light-colored background color. If you don’t mind this, leave them. Otherwise, it would be a good idea to trim them before sending the top to us. We, at Windward Quilting will trim them for you IF you request this, for a charge. It does take time away from quilting to prepare your top in this way. It would be much better if you checked the back first and trim any remaining threads.

  • Pressing seams is also something you should take the time to do before it gets to us. It really does make a difference in the finished quilt. Unpressed seams can create lumps in the top that quilting will not hide. While we can try to quilt around any big bumps, this is not always possible. Take the time, as you piece your top, to press your seams.

  • Binding - If you decide you would like us to attach the binding for you (this does not finish the binding, just attach to the front), be sure you have included a sufficient amount of fabric for us to create enough 2 1/2” strips for the perimeter of your quilt plus at least 1 foot extra (at least!). We will cut strips and piece them together for a small fee or you can prepare the binding yourself. You should cut, piece and press the binding (in half lengthwise) so it is ready to be attached.
